Karim Khan Citadel

Karim Khan Citadel is located in the center of Shiraz. This citadel was constructed in Zandiyeh dynasty during Karim Khan Kingdom on 1766 A.D. in his capital, Shiraz and it is the most important remnant that shows the architectural style of Zandiyeh specially Karim Khan era.

Karim Khan Citadel with verandas and rooms decorated with mural paintings, flower beds and fountains have made the interior past very delightful and delicate. The three sides of North, South and West have each a veranda and six rooms. On the east, there is a private bathroom and the services facilities.

The four watchtowers and a ditch (not existed nowadays) were the defending elements. The thickness of the walls is 3 meters in the base and 2.8 meters in upper parts. One of the watchtowers of Karim Khan Citadel has become crooked like Pisa tower and become one of Shiraz tourist attractions.

During Reza Pahlavi kingdom from 1925 to 1941 A.D., Citadel was used as the main prison of the city. Because of this reason, they covered all the mural paintings and Muqarnas (squinches) wit plaster and most of the rooms and halls divided to small cells.

On 1971, Karim Khan Citadel was restored under the supervision of culture and Heritage organization.
