Maharloo Lake

Maharloo Lake, known as Pink Lake is a seasonal salt pond in Fars province with an area of 600 sq.km and 27 km southeast of Shiraz.

Rudkhane-ye-Khoshk, which is a seasonal river flowing through the city of Shiraz and carries most of the flood water to the Maharloo Lake during heavy precipitations. The lake water usually evaporates by the end of summer and the white salt lake bed appears. By mid-summer since the evaporation rate is high and salt concentrations, the lake water turns pinkish red.

The pink color comes from cyanobacteria living under these harsh conditions. There are some bacteria in water that cause it to change to pink color.

It’s better to visit Maharloo Lake early in the morning or shortly before sunset since the pinkish color will be more visible. Also those flying into Shiraz can witness spectacular views from above when the lake is full
