Azadi Tower

Azadi tower previously called Shahyad is the symbol of Tehran. This tower dates back to 1966 that on this year a competition was held for designing a symbol for Iran and The 24 years old Architect Hossain Amanat won and was chosen for construction of this tower. The construction of this monument finished after 28 months and on 14 January 1972 it was inaugurated under the name of Shahyad.

Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah and his wife Farah had participated on Shahyad tower inauguration ceremony and the Cyrus Cylinder was unveiled on this place.

On the days of Islamic revolution, this square was an important place for the protests.

The architecture of Azadi tour is a mixture of Achamanid, Sassanid and Islamic styles. In this monument, the main arch in the middle, is a symbol of Kasra Arch (Taq-e-Kasra) from pre-Islamic era and the upper broken arch is from architectural styles of Islamic periods in Iran.

This three- storey Monument has the length of 63 meters and height of 45 meters from the ground level. Azadi tower has 4 elevators, 2 stairs and 286 steps and in lower levels there are several halls, galleries, museums, and library.

The exterior area of the tower has the design of main vault of Sheikh Lotf -Allah mosque in Isfahan for using as flower beds and the fountains are inspired from Iranian gardens.
